International retailer Claire’s Stores Inc. has recently disputed claims of asbestos presence in their products after completing yet another laboratory test to prove that its makeup is free of the hazardous substance.
In a statement on Thursday, the fashion and accessories retailer said that test results guaranteed that its nine cosmetic products currently in hot waters are asbestos-free.
“We are pleased to report that test results received to date from two certified independent labs confirm that the products in question are asbestos-free, completely safe and meet all government requirements,” CNBC reports Claire’s as saying. The company also indicated that its talc ingredient had tested asbestos-free.
Asbestos in Claire’s Makeup
This announcement came on the heels of controversy after a woman reported that her daughter’s cosmetics from the brand contain asbestos. Sean Fitzgerald, a Scientific Analytical Institute scientist claimed that all of the 17 samples collected are tested positive for tremolite asbestos, which is linked to mesothelioma, an aggressive and fatal form of cancer.
Despite proving that its makeup is free of asbestos, Claire’s vowed to still honour returns from customers who feel uncomfortable with the controversial products. However, it remains uncertain whether the cosmetics will return after being pulled out from the shelves on Dec. 28.
