On March 5, 2019, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., and Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition director Susan Mayne, Ph.D. released a statement confirming that three Claire’s cosmetics products contained asbestos. This is the latest development in a controversy that began in 2017.
FDA Confirms Asbestos in 3 Claire’s Cosmetics Products
The statement pinpoints three Claire’s products which were found to contain tremolite asbestos:

- Claire’s Eye Shadows – Batch No/Lot No: 08/17
- Claire’s Compact Powder – Batch No/Lot No: 07/15
- Claire’s Contour Palette – Batch No/Lot No: 04/17
This is not the first time the cosmetics brand has had troubles relating to asbestos in their products. In 2017, an American lawyer specializing in asbestos cases decided to send her daughter’s makeup to an independent lab. The makeup tested positive for asbestos.
In the ensuing investigation, a total of 17 products were found to contain the hazardous substance. Consequent third-party testing reaffirmed the asbestos content in three Claire’s products.
Despite all these findings, Claire’s has denied test results ever since the controversy first arose. It has responded to the newest FDA findings by disputing them and claiming that they “show significant errors.”
